Frequently asked questions
Is a US gallon the same as a UK gallon?
No. 1 US gallon ≈ 3.7854 liters and 1 UK (imperial) gallon ≈ 4.5461 liters. The UK gallon is about 20% larger, so always check which system a recipe or fuel-economy figure uses.
How many milliliters in a fluid ounce?
1 US fluid ounce ≈ 29.5735 mL. 1 UK fluid ounce ≈ 28.4131 mL. The two are close but not identical.
Is a cup the same everywhere?
No. A US legal cup is 240 mL, the US customary cup used in recipes is 236.588 mL, and a metric cup is 250 mL. This converter uses the US customary cup unless noted.
How do I convert volume to weight?
You can’t in general — the conversion depends on density. 1 liter of water weighs 1 kg, but 1 liter of olive oil weighs about 0.92 kg. Use a dedicated calculator that asks for the substance.
